The world Heritage Convention was set up by UNESCO on 16 November 1972 with the aim of identifying, protecting and preserving areas considered to be of outstanding value to humanity.
Chosen sites can be of natural or cultural significance but what they have in common is that they are recognised as the best possible examples of the world's heritage.
Since 1972, 178 countries have signed the agreement and 788 areas have been designated as world heritage sites.
The 18th April is now officially recognised as World Heritage Day.
The reverse design of the Australia 50 cent coin consists of the standard Australian Coat of Arms.
